Inlays and Onlays

What are inlays and onlays?

Where a tooth has become partly damaged due to decay or impact an inlay or onlay allows us to retain as much of the original tooth as possible whilst maintaining its structural integrity and shape.

Inlays and onlays are similar to crowns in that they are made of a hard wearing artificial marterial that is designed to match the colour of your original tooth. The main difference is that onlays and onlays do not sit over the top of your entire tooth, instead they target specific areas of the tooth such as its center or edges.

How does the treatment work?

During your first appointment we will prepare the tooth for the inlay or onlay. This will involve clearing out any decay, old fillings or removing any cracked or weak enamel. Once this is done we produce images and measure up the tooth so that the inlays or onlays will achieve the perfect fit in or on your tooth. We will then apply a temporary crown to your tooth to protect it between appointments

During your second appointment we will remove the temporary crown and apply the inlay or onlay. Once we're both satisfied that it fits right then we'll secure it to your tooth and remove any debrey that from the tooth and your mouth.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

A well made and applied inlay or onlay will last for many years. How long they last depends on several things:

  • The remaining strength of the tooth on which they sit

  • How well you care for your teeth

  • How much sugary food and drink you consume
